Why Blog? - Jason Brown

I am still giving thanks for the testimony of our sisters on Sunday morning during corporate worship.  Their stories of faith and God's grace made me incredibly glad.  Thanks, Shirley, Kim and Mayte for sharing your life with us.  (If you'd like to listen to their stories again, Click Here.)

This week, I'd like to hear from you related to the value and purpose of the blog. Below are some questions.  Pick one (or more) and post a response. Your answers will be helpful to me and to the many others who read the blog.

  • What have you appreciated about the blog?
  • In your mind, what should be the purpose(s) of the pastor's blog?
  • How do you use the blog and how could the blog be a more helpful tool for your spiritual growth?
  • What is the benefit to our church of a well-used blog?
  • What would encourage more of the people who read the blog to post a response? (I ask this because lots of people read the blog, but few post responses -- maybe those of you who haven't posted responses, could take a minute to answer this one.)

You may have something to say that isn't directly related to the questions above.  Great -- post that thought.  As always, if you have a personal story you want to share related to DJ08 or groups that you're in, please take a minute to share it.

I'm going to comment on the first question...
I haven't commented too much, but what I really have appreciated about the blog is that it is a great review for me during the week. When I get time to read it, I am reminded again of the sermon from the previous Sunday. We are not really doing the DJ08 devotions, we have a wonderful devotional from the Buccowich's called "Streams in the Desert" and that seems to fit our circumstance right now. I'm sure I'm not the only one that is uplifted during the Sunday service, and I am renewed for the week ahead...but...very soon I forget the words that impacted me from the sermon or the music, and reading the blog reminds me and comments from others give me a new insight. I am blessed by the blog, even if I am not able to check it all the time. Thank you Jason, for all your hard work every week to type down your thoughts.

Bless you!!!

I appreciate this blog to see how people feel and react to the messages. It helps us reflect on what was shared. I loved the new stories we heard this week. It was a good way to reflect in our own lives as to where we have placed God. It helps us to place the trust back where it belongs.
I appreciate the time you are putting into this Jason. I hope that more people will respond. You are a blessing.

It is great to get different personal perspectives and interpretations of the messages each week. Hebrews says it quite well:

Hebrews 10:23-26
23Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

I am always encouraged by what I read on the blog. It helps to "spur" me on in the faith.

Thank you Jason for the holding unswervingly to the hope that we profess, you are loved!

As a pastor I feel for all the people who have to sit and listen to me blab at them for 30 minutes. They just have to sit and take it. I like the idea of the blog as a chance for the congregation to speak back, to share insights, and to coach each other. That way it's not just one voice speaking to us... it's all of us being the Body of Christ together.

The blog gives us glimpse of what in your heart, mind, soul, life as we are writing or responding. It allows people to be heard. It solicits different perspectives of what people see, hear, and react to the sermon. Personally, I read the blogs for those who may be struggling with a hard portion of the sermon or may simply disagree with my own response. It discover it is refreshing to hear what others have to say out of their own life experiences and how the sermon is challenging to them. Let's keep blogging away. It makes us aware that one person doesn't have all the answers.

Ah...to blog or not to blog, that is the question. My guess is that there are any number of reasons why not: time constraints, feeling like we have nothing significant to say, self-consciousness about who may be reading whatever we write, lack of access to the web, not knowing what the blog is, where it is or what it's for. As I went to the site this morning I tried to look at it with a fresh eye. I know you guys have worked hard to make it user friendly but some folks might think the blog is for pastors...it does say "Pastor's Blog." Maybe we just need more education and time to adjust to this form of communication. How about a video skit demo of using the blog? Or maybe until we all get on board we need a few "assigned bloggers" each week--non-pastor/non-leader types--to show others who read but don't post that this is something they could do. And like all forms of ministry, numbers aren't the only measure of effectiveness, right? So hang in there, guys. All of us "old dogs" may eventually catch onto the new tricks.

There are so many people at Emmanuel that I haven't met and have not had the honor of hearing the amazing things in their heart. However, with this blog I get to do just that. It has been encouraging in so many ways to hear from my brothers and sisters about their thoughts and what's going on in their hearts, especially in response to sermons. This is an invaluable and unique tool in this "technology" age. It not only gives insight to pastors that they may not otherwise have gotten about the congregation, but also adds another way in which the church can build unity and gain strenght. We live in an age dominated by technology: why not use it for the glory of God?!

Thank you, Jason, for giving us the opportunity to hear and respond to our pastor's blogs. It's wonderful to say things and not be challenged or interrupted (smile.) I am sometimes distracted in the service by the cute and cuddly little babies or just looking around to see who is missing or present. Therefore, I might miss some of the important thoughts being presented. Your blogs give me a second opportunity to hear for the first time or review what I have heard. The responses help me to see and appreciated the views of others and to gain insight into their hearts. This is what being a family is all about. I hope that more of our family will blog so that we can get to know their thoughts and desires.
