God's Treasure -- Jason Brown

God's Treasure -- Jason Brown

I'm thinking about the sermon yesterday.   I want to treasure what God treasures.  I also want to live in the reality that Kingdom of God is something that's given -- it can never be gotten.  Jesus is pleased to give his "little flock" the Kingdom.  I'm actually a citizen in a country where "every good gift comes from above."  I don't need to get it for myself.  Instead of focusing on getting, I can focus on giving -- just like our heavenly father does.  This is a profound thought for me.

I thought is was interesting how kind, loving, pastoral -- whatever you want to call it -- Jesus was the moment before telling his listeners to sell their possessions and give to the poor.  I'm glad verse 32 precedes verse 33 (Luke 12).

I was totally impressed on saturday to see a bunch of friends hosting a garage sale to raise money for a fellow Emmanuelite who had fallen on hard times. All day long these friends sold their possessions to give money to the poor - and there as a lot of joy there! In fact, my kids asked if i could go home without them and leave them there to hang out! That's the kind of joy there is in this strange new kingdom of Jesus when we treasure what he treasures.

I didn't learn (still learning) to treasure what our Lord treasures until I began to grow in my love for Him. Over the years, He has become more and more the treasure that I cherish more than anything in this life. It has seemed to follow naturally - my growing ability to treasure and love the things and those that Jesus loves. I'll admit - sometimes it isn't always that easy to love some. But then God reminds me of His love for them and His willingness to help me love as He loves. (And there are times when I really do need everything that He can give me). But the choice is mine to make. Once the choice to treasure what our Lord Jesus treasures is made, He helps me to view people as He sees them - with much of their potential surrendered to loving and serving Him. How can I not love those who are or will become part of my spiritual family? How can I not pray for those with whom I will spend all of eternity? We are, indeed, a family that treasures each member (and potential member) and are, in turn, much treasured by our Savior and God. How wonderful to be a part of all of this!
